Quran and Imamat

Quran Aur Noor e Imamat (Urdu)

Praise be to Allah for His favours that the useful book "The Holy Quran and the Light of Imamat (Quran awr Nur-i Imamat)" has been published having passed through the stage of calligraphy and printing. The most fundamental and the most important concept of the Ismaili Tariqah, which is the perpetual and inseparable link of the Holy Quran and the Light of Imamat is discussed in this lovely and desired book. The subject, in itself, is so vast and so great, that it covers the rest of the religious subjects.

The first proof of this fact is that according to verse (Holy Quran 65:5) the Holy Quran is amr (command) and according to verse (Holy Quran 4:59) the true Imam is sahib-i amr (lord of command). Since the command and the lord of command comprise everything of religion, there can be no subject, word or deed of religion beyond their spiritual domain.
Another proof of this fact is that the Quran is the Book of God in which there is the explanation of everything (Holy Quran 16:89) and the Imam of the time is the holy personality in whom is encompassed everything (Holy Quran 36:12). A wise mumin can estimate the infinite vastness of the domain of knowledge and wisdom of the Quran and the Imam from theses proofs.

It is necessary for a true mumin to know the principle that there are many names ordained for the Quran and the Imam. Thus, whenever in the Divine Speech the Quran is mentioned, the Imam is also necessarily mentioned and vice versa, because neither is the Book without the Teacher, nor the Teacher without the Book. By reflecting for a little while this unchangeable law of religion will be clear that with every perfect and complete thing there are its accessories too, otherwise it remains incomplete. Thus, according to verse (Holy Quran 5:3), the perfection of Islam and the completion of the Divine favour mean that with the Quran has to last its Teacher also and this has continued as a fact.

The fountainhead of all fundamental and real beauties of the religion of Islam at the time of Prophethood was the Holy Prophet himself. It was he who was the luminous lamp (Holy Quran 33:46), the light of the Quran (Holy Quran 5:15) and the Teacher of heavenly Book (Holy Quran 2:151). After his demise this position is held by his successor, who is the Imam of the time.

The Hadith in which the Holy Prophet has linked Mawla Ali to Mawlana Harun means that he, with exception of Prophethood, had , had all those perfect attributes which Hazrat Harun had, because after the Holy Prophet there was no prophet. This wisdom-filled Hadith opens a special door to the recognition of the Imam for the true Mumins, which is related to deep study of the Quranic Story of Hazrat Musa and Hazrat Harun.

Just as the people of the world cannot make a guidebook for themselves without a heavenly Book, they themselves are not able to be its Teacher, who is revealed from God. Thus it has been perpetual law of the religion of nature that, not only is the Book revealed from God, but its Teacher is also appointed by Him, so that he, with Divine grace and help, may teach the people the Book and Wisdom according to their capacity.

The Holy Quran in the Ginan Literature

The Holy Qur’an in the Ginanic Literature – An Initial Exploration by Rashida Noormohamed-Hunzai

This paper seeks to demonstrate the underlying teachings of the holy Qur’an in the Ginanic Literature, therefore it is essential, first of all to describe the nature of the Qur’an, as well as that of the Ginans in order to understand better the relationship between them.

The holy Qur’an is the Divine revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) and unites the entire Muslim ummah. In its own words in Surah 26, verses 192 to 195: “It is a revelation of the Lord of the worlds, which the True Spirit has brought down upon your (i.e. Prophet Muhammad’s) heart that you may be of the warners in plain Arabic speech.” We further learn from the Qur’an in Surah 56, verses 77-80 that: “This is indeed a noble Qur’an in the Kitab-i maknun or the hidden Book, which none touches except the purified, a revelation from the Lord of the worlds”. Kitab-i maknun is also described as the Kitab-i munir (35:25) or the Luminous Book, which is the source of the Books of all the previous Messengers of God, about whom God says: “And We never sent a messenger save with the language of his people or nation (qawm), that he might make the message clear for them.” (Surah 14, verse 4).

These scriptural references establish that the Prophets through their spiritual elevation, which in the case of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) is described as the Mi`raj, have access to the Kitab-i munir or the Kitab-i maknun and then they express their spiritual experiences in the language of their people. The transition from the luminous spiritual dimension to people’s language requires that such sublime experiences be couched in the language of parables and allegories, thus the Prophets have to “teach the wisdom of the Book”, technically known as the ta’wil or esoteric interpretation. In Shia Imami Ismaili Islam this function of giving the ta’wil or inner meaning of the allegories and parables of the Qur’an is done by the rasikhun fi’l `ilm (i.e. those who are firmly grounded in knowledge). When Imam al-Baqir was asked the identity of the rasikhun fi’l-`ilm mentioned in (3:7), he replied: “The foremost of them is God’s Messenger, for God taught him all that was revealed to him of the tanzil and the ta’wil and he knew the ta’wil of everything that was revealed to him, with no exception. After him, the legatees (i.e. his successors, the Imams) are the rasikhun who know its ta’wil in its entirety.”
